বেশীর ভাগ গণিতবিদ তাদেরকাজে নান্দনিক তৃপ্তি খুঁজে পান। তারা গণিত বা গণিতের কোন নির্দিষ্ট রুপকে "সুন্দর" উপাধি দিয়ে এই তৃপ্তি প্রকাশ করেন। গণিতবিদেরা গণিতকে শিল্পের সাথে, নিদেনপক্ষে একধরনের সৃষ্টিশীল কাজের তুলনা করে থাকেন। গণিতের সাথে সংগীত ও কবিতার তুলনাও বিরল নয়!
সাহিত্যে নোবেল জয়ী রয়েল সোসাইটি এর সদস্য বারট্রান্ড রাসেল গণিতের সৌন্দর্যকে এভাবে প্রকাশ করেন-

Why are numbers beautiful? It's like asking why is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony beautiful. If you don't see why, someone can't tell you. I know numbers are beautiful. If they aren't beautiful, nothing is.
